another brilliant video!! i've been engrossed in Nirvana's music and the life of Kurt for years, and when i read Perfume about a year ago i kept it in mind that it was his favourite/most influential book he read. as i read it, i couldn't help but get the feeling that the character of Grenouille had a sort of similarity to Cobain. As you said, there was that childhood abandonment, and each went through different living situations through their adolescence. This may be morbid, but the period when Grenouille lived in the cave reminded me of the story of Kurt living under a bridge (what 'Something in the Way' is based off i believe). Each sought refuge in their talents and ambitions for years, but as they would reach their 'goal' in a sense they realised it wasn't nearly as great as they believed. As you said, they each had a self-inflicted and disturbing death, out of a want to escape the environment they had never wanted. Obviously, Kurt struggled with his mental health and addiction for years, and Grenouille is a fictional murd3rer, so i'm trying not to make it sound like we should villainise Kurt or sympathise with Grenouille, but i thought it was a very interesting comparison i saw whilst reading the book.
Once again, this video was beautiful! i adore your takes and analysis' on music that have literary influence. it truly inspires me to dig deeper into lyrics and also, i've received many book recommendation from these too!
sorry for the rant ahaha! cannot wait for what you create next <3

I only clicked faster on your Hoziers videos 🤣 I'm not a fan, nor a hater, of nirvana. I never heard this song before but I have read the book and loved seeing the connections! I'm in love with your content and glad I "discovered" your channel ❤️

Really cool video. I remember seeing an interview of Kurt talking about the book so this is a full circle moment.

I had a presentation about the book in school this year, i watched the movie rather many years ago and read the book like 3 years ago. The book is simply amazing. But i do believe that so much humour and even disgust gets lost in a translation. It being a book written by a German shocked me bc it was actually good, im looking at you Goethe for torturing me with your work at school. As German is my first language, a jackpot. I mentioned that it was Cobains favourite book and he had a song about it, i had to as a big Nirvana fan. The teacher replied with "it makes sense it was his favourite". I almost completely lost it in front.

Glad someone made the connection, don't be jealous but this 58-year-old man got to see Kurt in concert in 1991 most amazing show in Hollywood I have ever seen, ...The Movie was very powerful too...Kurt was a true artist....most people at that time were rockers and hair metal it was contagious what Nirvana did..it blew up so fast...it conquered Michael Pedo and the Hair Bands...it was almos a religious experience similar to the Book....the ending was what Kurt was looking for and did get his results and you would have known that from his concerts ...it was that kind of energy ...not even the Chili Peppers or Janes Addiction could touch this band...Nirvana is timeless...

I just read the book and I didn't know about the song. When I saw the lyrics I recognised the book right away "Like most babies smell like butter His smell smelled like no other". Very good video! I loved that you quote the precise parts to explain the lyrics. Thanks

I like many others discovered you through your holier videos and immediately subscribed. Was (and still am) a huge fan of nirvana and in uteri was one of the staple albums of my middle/high school years this was such an enlightening video! The way you express yourself is really serene and comforting, thank you for sharing your light with us🩵

Perhaps due to the translation that I read the book in, I didn't connect with the book as deeply as you did, but I liked how deeply disturbing it was at times, which is what stuck with me the most. And no matter his parasitic and pathological nature, I could not hate Grenuille.

Wonderful video! I'm definitely going to have to give this book a read. I remember there being a movie adaptation and seeing the trailers for that and thinking of reading it but time got away from me. If you ever get the chance to see the adaptation, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Also, your thoughts on other Nirvana songs. You've got quite the gift of breaking things down and interpretation.

Great video! Stick Season by Noah Kahan is an album that I think will definitely scratch the "appreciation for nuanced songwriting" itch in your brain.

I read this book for my IB English Lit programme and I kid you not I was so close to discussing it for my English oral exam but I didn’t thing I could talk eloquently enough about the end as an extract so I used Frankenstein and The Reader to discuss lack of justice in the justice system and how these two books represent justice.

This is a great video! You might be interested to read about PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love album. She has cited Flannery O'Connor as her inspiration.

I just listened to this song and all I could think of was this is either very inspired by the Jesus lizzard or the Jesus lizard got their sound from this track.
