I’m the second person in my family to have gone electric. Equally, I would like to see the end of petrol and diesel vehicles.

Efficient driving is, in the end, achievable for everyone. While I do applaud the 569 miles with a Mach-E, I don't think it will really change anything. I drive an Ioniq 6 myself. And these days, in this summer weather, with no A/C on, I can take my Ioniq 6 on a 550km journey without problem even though the WLTP testing says I should only get 429km out of the standard range battery pack. And back when I had a classic Ioniq 28kWh, with an NEDC range of around 240km if I remember correctly, something many people said was impossible to get, I did over 300km in the summer on a single charge.

How far you drive depends first and foremost on your right foot. The weather only comes second. Something so many people seem to forget over and over again.

It's amazing how she can rapid fire this many topics at this length of time. You never see this on live broadcasts.

As someone who has recently relocated from the Mid-Atlantic to the Maritimes, I am glad to hear that Nova Scotia is getting additional charging infrastructure installed. Level 2 is a good step forward, though they really need to add more DC Fast Charging into the mix, which brings me to a charging story.

In September 2022 when my wife and I were on a cross continental trip, we stopped at the charging station in Monastery NS. There was a couple in a Tesla Model 3 getting a charge at the L2 charger and a Kia Niro (or was it a Hyundai Kona ?) plugged in at the DC fast charger. The driver of the Kia had gotten in another car with a friend and left the charging station right after he started the charging session. I was the first to arrive after the gentleman in the Kia departed. Meanwhile, after I arrived and got in queue there were at least 3 more EVs that stacked up behind me. The Kia was well above 80% SOC and was barely pulling a charge. Meanwhile the folks in the queue were starting to get pretty angry about the situation, needless to say. Finally after, waiting for more than an hour at the charger, the gentleman who owned the Kia arrived. Upon seeing the queue, I believe he thought it best to remain silent as he got into his car and quickly drove away. Meanwhile, there was a collective (and huge) sigh of relief as I pulled my Bolt EV into the station and started charging, ever so mindful to get just the bare minimum charge to reach my next charging stop... Oh what fun.

Any chance you could do a story on the interminable delays Kia EV6 owners are suffering waiting to have their ICCU’s replaced. Mine has been in the shop for 6 weeks now, and all they can tell me is the part is on back order. They’ve known about this problem for over a year and officially launched a recall in April. It’s ridiculous they’re not prioritizing delivery of the parts needed to get their customers back on the road, while hey don’t seem to have any trouble delivering brand new EV6’s.

That EQE that burned in Korea - would you cover any investigation results? 3 days parked and not charging, seems very odd event.

Great work btw!

Glad to see new cheaper chemistry. Sodium-Ion and now Potassium-Iron! In the long run, we definitely need to see a Cafe racer using KFe cells!

I’m looking for a tiny vehicle that was, once upon a time, driveable on a moped license. It was called the Cursor. It was like a spotty microcar to look at, and a hoot to drive. It was produced on the Yamaha FS-1E moped, but would be better with a little electric motor instead.

They really have to get rid of the cables at the charging stations already and just adopt a standard cable that people can plug in that they keep in their car. Too much opportunity for sabotage that can keep a charging station down for days or weeks.

Regarding EV long distance records: Within the last 10 years people have converted ICE cars to electric and have managed to achieve 1100km+ (684 miles). One team in fact achieved 1200km (746 miles). And these were cars driving normally in normal settings. Getting these distances out of EVs is actually not that hard. It just hasn't been done commercially on a large scale.

As for the efficiency: over the last three weeks I've been monitoring my humble 2015 24kwh Nissan Leaf as I drive it around London, England. It has been achieving between 5.0 and 6.3 miles per kwh. It actually peaked at 6.7mpk, but a hill brought the efficiency back down to 6.3mpk on that day.

Jonathan Porterfield formerly of Eco Cars just drove a Kia e-Niro 240 miles in poor conditions and had 50 miles range left in it. When I hired an e-Niro it also showed that it would get very close to 300 miles on a charge. That was normal driving in normal conditions across England and back.

The fact is that there is no reason why EVs can't all be achieving this "record level" performance. But car companies are reluctant to make ICE components totally redundant while there's still money to be made from existing stock. If they went whole-heartedly towards EVs it would be common to get 500+ miles per charge in small, cheap vehicles and 800+ miles in big, expensive vehicles. EVs don't need to be so big because most people don't drive a fraction as far as the bigger batteries allow. They now make EV batteries for motorbikes that have the same capacity as an original Renault Zoe (22kwh) but a fraction of the size. You could make cars around these motorbike batteries and make proper small vehicles. You could make original size Minis on mass instead of the odd specialist classic conversion. You could make medium size cars with way more internal space because the batteries have shrunk and improved and will continue to do so.

Aotearoa is the North Island of New Zealand. I believe the winter testing is done on the south island where snow is more reliable 👍

When a manufacturer "software locks" battery capacity, do they cap the charge per cell or do they disconnect some cells? The former is probably better for battery life, but the latter would let you switch which cells run as some deteriorate.
