This video is for English learners who want to improve their knowledge and understanding of the English language.

The study of the historical origins of words is called etymology. "Hidden Meanings" is a video series by Deep English that examines the etymology of common words in the English language. It is important to focus on common words, as those are the ones that are used more frequently in daily conversation and writing.

In this video, Teela explains the hidden meanings of the following English words:

crisis
sense
angst
genuine
manifest

If you can better understand and use these words easily, then you are one step closer to English fluency. You will be more confident, too.

Any questions? Ask them below.

Hi, I'm a latin guy, born in Venezuela, and I'd like to comment on the word manifest because we have a similar one in Spanish which is 'manifiesto', now, in Spanish this word refers either to the fact of telling what is in a container (in the case of importations or exportations of goods), in these cases the Law requires a manifest for each import or export being carried out; but this word is also used when a person wants to tell something about a thing or about another person. When this happens we say in Spanish that person is 'manifesting' either his wishes or his will with regard something. An example of this could be: I want to manifest what my intentions are about the meeting we are attending this afternoon... Regards!

Hi Teela! Your choice to uncover the meaning of words is really amazing. I am appreciating very much your teachings and becoming surprised with the meaning of some words. Regarding this lesson, the word crisis shook my mind from its actual stand point, because I always considered it as something terrible that comes upon us. But now I can see it in another way as a turning point, which can end up as something much better or much worse. So it represents an opportunity of changing. And I know that without changing life cannot be improved. Congratulations!

The word "Manifest" is used, in Portuguese (I´m not sure about English - I´m Brasilian), in a philosophical realm, for example for "the manifested world", regarding to the "visible" world, or even deeper "the Creation". Is it used in English the same way? It´s really interesting because what you explained reveals not only a different way to use, but the broad concept of the words!
Amazing videos! Thanks a lot!!!

Thank you so much for this interesting video. In Russian language the word manifest means to proclaim something, or following vocabulary written appeal of the supreme power to the people (outdated). 2. Written appeal, appeal, statement of any provisions of a program nature.
