Cervical cancer is a common cancer in women worldwide and a major cause of cancer-related deaths in developing countries. In countries where there are national programs for cervical cancer screening the prevalence has fallen considerably. Signs of cervical cancer include abnormal vaginal bleeding, discomfort in the vagina, smelly discharge, and painful urination. To diagnose cervical cancer, doctors check for the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and use a test called a Papanicolaou (Pap) test. The treatment of cervical cancer frequently requires a multidisciplinary approach. Involvement of a gynecologic oncologist, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist may be necessary.
