Used to sing this to my kids when they were real young--brought a tear to my daughters eye-she would have been about 6 or 7 at the time in late 70s

Interesting thing about this Roger Miller song is that Del Shannon actually learned how to yodel long after this recording, which had little U.S. airplay, but just about topped the UK charts. The original b side on the Big Top label, You Never Talked About Me, was a hit in Australia, trombones and all, reminiscent of Gene Mcdaniels's Tower Of Strength. I remember seeing Del Shannon singing The Swiss Maid on Connecticut Bandstand and I instantly loved it. I wonder if anyone has a tape of that, although there are later live versions of Del singing this, proud that he perfected his yodeling. News of Tom Petty's passing as I write this is sad, but I seem to recall that Del Shannon was his idol. Mine, too.

Had this 45 when I was 12 years old and still lived in the UK, at the time. It was a great song, at least for me at the time.

As a teen growing up in Perth, Australia I was a huge fan of Del Shannon.
One song I loved was the Swiss Maid ....little did I know I'd end up marrying one!
(25 years together and as happy as ever)

Written by the great Roger Miller, this song fit perfectly with Del's tragically themed songbook.

Very interesting stuff, David Cornell. I always loved this song, although I considered myself a bit sentimental to do so. I thought as a 12 year old it was a quality composition, so to me it confirms that to hear it's by Roger Miller.

brilliant song but it really is of a sad story and fate and the whole record just holds a tone of complete creepiness and haunt
