A primary impression is the first step in fabrication of complete dentures.
This video demonstrates a technique of primary impression using impression compound with a non perforated stock metal tray with impression compound. Alginate or irreversible hydrocolloid can also be used in a perforated stock metal tray.

The primary impression is used to construct a primary cast on which a custom tray is fabricated for the secondary or final impression.
