I lived through it. Even Elton John was in the closet. Defending homosexuality would have killed anyone's career. No one would dare. When a Mega Star Madonna talked about it and defended so openly on TV, the world was shocked. Many of her concerts were cancelled in some countries because of it. So many people came out because of her. She was the first and only person I had ever heard using and defending gays publicly. I was happy, but scared of the backlash against gays and that I would not be allowed to listen to her anymore. I remember when she was in the news with Justify My Love, and defending homosexuality on TV, people were stunned. They thought she had gone too far, turning kids gay. Even Pope joined. When she didn't apologize and became hotter, instead of falling down, it became cool for others to follow her, years and years later. The new generation is clueless. They think Ru Paul was on tv since 1800s.

Its so sad that the present gays have dismissed her not knowing how much she's done for the LGBTQ+ community

Madonna played a major role in opening up gay culture to the mainstream. She wasn’t gay herself, but from the beginning she talked about how gay people were part of her life: her gay mentor, her dance teacher, Christopher Flynn; the artists and photographers she hung around with like Keith Haring and Herb Ritts; the gay dancers she paraded around so proudly in the film In Bed With Madonna.
This was when George Michael, Freddie Mercury and the Pet Shop Boys didn’t dare to come out

She’s an amazing advocate for so many things and a big empathy. People need to concentrate on her craft and her reasons for standing up for the things she believe in. NOT what she looks like and her age!

Madonna has been charged with a lot of things -- blamed for being too sexualized, and called a poser for her behavior. She supported LGBTQ communities when it was considered "wrong." But, she admitted to all of this during a time when you could lose your entire career for this. That is powerful. I admire her for that.

Madonna clutches her pearls at the end because she was surprised to learn Scandinavia was so unsure about who should be allowed to adopt babies and she knew her answer would be heard by everyone. She’s got broad shoulders for someone so tiny.

I seriously don't think i would be here if it wasn't for Madonna! I first heard la Isla Bonita when I was 7 and have always followed her since. But she gave me the power to be open!

What a woman! A Hero! Spoke about things nowadays popgirls are fighting for - our attention. When it wasn't cool or even brave. She stood up for us when noone did. Fearless hero of our lifetime.

More people need to see these videos of Madonna and how she stuck up for gays lesbians etc when NO ONE else was. George Michael, Elton where all still in the closet at this time. Madonna spoke out and didnt care if it ruined her career cos it mattered to her.

I grew up in the 80s & 90s and Madonna was always there, highlighting homophobia that was so prevalent at that time. Its so sad to read people now who say the newer generation don't give her credit for the changes she made towards the community. They need to do some homework.

Our fist open gay icon and first Queen ❤. There are a lot now that are like her and even if people say that is over (wich is not true..) we still need them, and honestly knowing that many artist risk their career if they talk about their sexuality is bullshit. Is fking 2020 and many people still having this mentality. So boring, why that many people don't have a brain like her and us 😤
