My favorite avatar is a Helldiver. It's pretty good, strong enough to handle being forced to use fists, decent HP, and coated in titanium armor so being shot at isn't a problem. However, there is a *glaring lack of mobility.*

Thr mamagen i use is reasonably strong from the start, quite a bit stronger and more defensive than the basic avatars but she is slow and large to make up for it

During the main story, I used a Jaeger bot from Pacific rim and stopped that one train (unfortunately it's to large for most maps)
