Speaking during a joint press conference with Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday, U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris reiterated the importance of standing up for LGBTQ+ rights as Ghana has seen an increase in proposed and passed anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
"This is an issue that we consider, and I consider, to be a human rights issue. And that will not change," Harris said.
Plus, Harris was also asked about China's influence in African countries. She said her trip to Ghana and other countries in Africa is motivated by the importance of the direct relationship between the U.S. and Ghana. While she did not speak on China directly, she said the U.S. and the Biden-Harris Administration are committed to strengthening ties with Ghana.
The vice-president met with leaders and staff before sitting down with Akufo-Addo for a bilateral meeting. The White House said the aim of the meetings is to affirm the strength of the U.S.-Ghana bilateral relationship and the long-standing ties between the American and Ghanaian people.
