FRIDA KAHLO TOUR OF MEXICO CITY | Eileen Aldis

There are so many Frida Kahlo (and Diego Rivera!) sites to visit and see in and around Mexico City that it can be a bit dizzying. I've put together a list of the top ones to check out, including a bonus spot outside of Mexico City in Rivera's hometown of Guanajuato. Begin your sightseeing tour at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in the Zocalo where you can see Frida's first self-portrait from when she was only 19-years-old. If you only have time for one stop, or only wish to visit one museum, then make it Museo Frida Kahlo also known as Casa Azul. Located in Coyoacán, this is Frida's childhood home where she lived a lot of her life and also died. You'll find many of her personal belongings like art supplies, furniture, and clothing as well as some of her art. It's a very busy site so make sure to buy your tickets online in advance to avoid waiting in a really long line! Just around the corner is the Trotsky Museum which feels very raw. Frida and Trotsky had an affair when he and his wife lived at Casa Azul. You can see bullet holes in the bedroom wall from an assassination attempt as well as the study where he was ultimately killed with an icepick to the skull. Another site is Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo located in San Ángel. These modern and distinct structures were built by architect Juan O'Gorman and occupied by the couple from 1934. Diego lived here until his death. I also really enjoyed visiting Museo Dolores Olmedo in Xochimilco, even though all of Frida's artwork was on tour abroad at an exhibition. Dolores Olmedo was a patron of the arts, notably of Diego Rivera's, and she donated her large collection to the people of Mexico. The museum is her old home, a sixteenth century hacienda. I especially loved seeing the many peacocks on the grounds and the unique breed of hairless dogs that live there called Xoloitzcuintli (or Xolo for short). The next museum wouldn't exist without the generosity of Dolores Olmedo: the Anahuacalli Museum. Frida and Diego were passionate about ancient Mexico and preserving that history for future generations. This museum has over fifty thousand pre-Columbian artifacts housed in a pyramid-like structure made of volcanic rock. The last site is a bonus because it's located in Guanajuato (an easy bus ride from Mexico City): Museo y Casa Diego Rivera. This is where Rivera was born and lived until he was six when his family moved to Mexico City. You can see a lot of his early artwork here as well as a painting of Frida Kahlo.

I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful! Please let me know if you've been to any of these places or would like to!
