Blending Genres (Action and Turn-Based) - Valkyria Chronicles

Apologies if I sound stuffy this week. The forces of the Pollen Nations launched a united assault on my position, leaving Sinus City little option but to shore up its defenses in preparation of an extended siege.

Anyway, what was I saying?

Oh right, Valkyria Chronicles. Not to be confused with Valkyrie Profile, or Xenoblade Chronicles, as I have to keep reminding my brain while typing.

Definitely a cool series, and an interesting experiment in mixing action and turn-based combat. Always did like it when developers tried out new ways to mix the two, and Medal of Honor: Anime Edition has a really fun take on it.

Might do more on the topic down the line, but unfortunately I currently have no means of capturing PS3 footage, so my options will be limited for a while. We’ll see how it goes.

To this day VC is still one of the most unique turn based games I’ve ever played.

Even Xcom Enemy Unknown was inspired by its design. :)

I really loved the gameplay because of how unique it is and how intense it can be. So many memories and interesting ideas, I remember a few off of the top of my head.
The tanks providing cover for your soldiers so you could move them up along the battlefield. destroying enemy sandbags with grenades to get a better shot on the enemy, getting rifle grenades to get an even better range on that or using those badass underbarrel flamethrowers. Having to defuse mines with your engineers so that your tanks and soldiers could advance. Having your scouts recon ahead so you could blow up or snipe an enemy from a distance. Quickly ending your turn while you were in the enemy’s reaction shot distance before they could shoot you. Plus running over sandbags and enemies and watching them ragdoll always laughed when that happened.
Plus a cast of memorable characters with unique personalities and appearances, some way too young to serve making you question just how much your country was scraping the barrel to fight this war
I still think of this game often and the 4th game which got released in the west as well, such a good series.

I just started VC 1 last night, ngl i am a Fire Emblem veteran but the learning curve in this game takes a good while, but god I love everything.

The shooting is satisfying, the artstyle is gorgeous and the graphicsl filters really make the game pop. Not really feeling the music though but this has been a real good game to start this month.

Great game... although, despite being half a dozen entries into the franchise, they never figured out how to avoid a difficulty spike halfway through every single game.
