James 5:16 comes in handy sometimes as well. This is a good argument as to why we confess our sins to a Priest. I was a Protestant for years before I become a Catholic, and in that time, not ONE parishioner of the denominations I attended, ever confessed their sins to one another, that I am aware of, nor was James 5:16 ever taught, or expected of us!

I remember one day when i went to weekday mass at my Catholic church, Saint Brigid and when i went up to Holy Communion, i was laughing unexpectedly while taking the host. Then i realized what i did was wrong. I broke one of the 10 commandments which was, Remember to keep the sabbath day holy. So one Saturday afternoon, i went to the sacrament of penance and told the priest what i did wrong. Then after confession, i felt more relieved.

In the Sacrament of Penance, Catholics believe that the priest represents God and the community. It is helpful to confess to a person because it gives a sense of accountability. The priest assigns the person a penance that can be as practical as apologizing to the person you wronged. You get to have a physical experience of someone putting their hands on your head and you get to actually hear the words that you are forgiven. It is powerful to really have that tangible experience of forgiveness.

The sacrament of confession isn’t like talking to the psychologist. You can make an appointment with your priest for a therapy session but penance you are talking to a divine presence thru a priest. We are made in the image of God—
Always keep priests in your prayers and Always ask our lady and Holy Spirit to guide you and help you during your penance. God bless!

If you yell at your friend, and then ask God for forgiveness, does that mean you don't have to apologize to your friend anymore? Will your friendship be automatically repaired? It's not that God doesn't have the power to do all- he does- but he wants us to repair our relationship with both him *and* others.
