Sorry to hear that the AU-58 market is going up, because I'm trying to collect seated coins in the AU-50 to AU-58 grade. That's because I see old coins as historical objects, and coins in the AU-50 to AU-58 scale look practically new, but someone back when the coins were new actually handled the coins. This puts you in connection with the people back then. I find it cool.

Hats off to anyone who truly appreciates a well struck Lincoln penny. Anyone who does is a true numismatist. As for me, I just can't seem to find the appreciation for such things. To me it's like finding the nicest looking cornflake in a box of cereal.

Hey Ben in reference to the 48D - love the color - many many years ago in a galaxy far far away - i took new Lincoln cents and would put them in my mom's cast iron skillet and heat em up - I wish I still had the ones I did - but the colors were amazing!!!! - close to what the 48D looks like - only really worked on pennies - nickels dimes and quarters didn't really turn color as much - where did a 12 year old get that idea - too long ago - I forgot

As a generalization I disagree with crackouts, and consider it a lofty gamble. That cent is pretty exceptional and I appreciate the explanation on natural toning. But it's still a gamble

Greetings. On the '48-D cent, could you have saved anything by sending to PCGS still in the ANACs holder and asking them to cross over provided it would straight grade, otherwise return in it's ANACs holder? A shame to diminish it that way and make a details coin of it, because of their unwillingness to commit, then charging you for the devaluing and diminishment of said coin. Sorry to see it.
