Set in the wake of the First World War’s many social and economic upheavals, Waters’s sixth novel is as emotionally compelling and psychologically gripping as her acclaimed Fingersmith and The Little Stranger. To keep up their estate, Frances and her mother take in boarders; Frances’s passionate involvement with one of them leads to love, but also to matters of life and death.

Am I the only one who is hoping for a movie or mini series (or long series 😉) of the paying guests?

Great interview. Sarah Waters is a standalone author.

Well informed interview, thoroughly enjoyed it.

I cannot decide which novel is my favourite – but I think its ‘The Paying Guests’.  Anyway I love her work; I get so absorbed by her main characters that they somehow live on in my imagination long after the last page has been read.

I hope her next novel won’t take 4 years to write!

great interview, had come over here to watch this just after finishing the book.
It is amazing and I definitely recommend a read, but after reading reviews by a few people, I realised that perhaps a book like that takes a certain kind of reader - with a patience or love for detail
for me, i loved how real everything in the book is- the characters, the setting, the events
How I wish Sarah (both Sarahs in fact) would do more interviews like this!

Almost PERFECT popular novel as it links genres like history/romance/crime. I loved the very different characters of the two main protagonists but could believe why they were drawn together. (I fancied the one I was supposed to, I fell QUITE in love with the other!!!) The final few chapters (Trial...) had me speed-reading!!! ("DON'T SAY A WORD!!!!") As with all great novels/stories, I was left hoping and wishing it worked out for them. Marvelous book by a marvelous writer and SO FAR, (I''ve not read everything YET by Sarah Waters...) my favourite of hers. Please, BBC, BUY THIS and do it as a three-part adapt!!! xx SF

I've just read this novel and recommend it highly - maybe her best yet.

Oh my! I would soooo love a movie from this book! Can't you just see Jessica Chastain as Frances?

Good interview. I enjoyed the little stranger. I wasn't too sure about saying the people who got hanged made a mistake. Men or woman are not supposed to kill each other or plan it even. Things happen and you can see how such things can happen but it can't be excused.

Why does the interviewer rattle on so much !! . I would have liked to hear Sarah’s views much more than hers.
