Mary, Mother of God: What the Early Church Fathers Believed

Using some of the earliest Christian writings as well as modern Church documents, Tim shows the “organic connection between our spiritual life and the dogmas” (Catechism 89) and that Mary “unites in her person and re-echoes the most important doctrines of the Faith” (Lumen Gentium 65). He brings to light the axiom “No Mary, No Jesus; Know Mary, Know Jesus” as exemplified by this most ancient Marian dogma. This talk is an excerpt from the 2019 Catholic Answers Annual Conference.

As a lifelong Catholic, son of a Southern Baptist Mama and an Irish Catholic from the North, growing up in the Bible Belt in central Georgia, Mary was always a stumbling block for me. I grew up reading the Bible and receiving a very poor catechesis from CCD. There was no EWTN or Catholic Answers or Ascension Press, so my "exegesis" of the text came from listening to great preachers like Charles Stanley or Paul Walker, whose sermons were available on stations out of Atlanta. I was a Catholic with a very Protestant take on the meaning of Bible passages. Mind you, I was not Sola Scriptura, but I had no knowledge of the Fathers or Tradition. What little I knew about the teachings of the Church about Mary seemed to contradict what the Scriptures said. I am so thankful for the growing number of apologetics apostolates today that are correcting the misconceptions that I and so many Catholics like me developed in the late twentieth century.

Great video. I think the biggest thing for our protestant friends to understand is that by calling Mary the Mother of God we are not trying to make Mary out to be the mother of the Godhead, or say that she is divine or superhuman. We are simply affirming the divinity of Christ from the very moment of his conception.

The greatest that ever lived; He had no servants, yet they called Him Master. He had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher. He had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer. He had no army, yet Kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world. He had no crime, yet they crucified Him. He had no need, yet He forgave them as they mocked. He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today. His name is Jesus Christ and He is the Saviour of the world.

Elizabeth once told Mary as MOTHER OF MY LORD... In the Bible, Jesus is called my Lord and my God... The Word Lord in the Bible also Means God...
