Omri Boehm – The Courage to Think for Yourself | Sternstunde Philosophie | SRF Kultur
Показать описание
Nothing more radical than the legacy of the Enlightenment! The German-Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm sees freedom, adulthood and self-determination as truly universal values that must be defended at all costs against left-wing and right-wing identity politics. A global vision for the 21st century.
00:00 When was the last time you didn’t think for yourself?
13:50 What is the difference between populism and Enlightenment?
39:56 Is identity politics the opposite of Enlightenment?
44:20 And why is the Old Testament that important?
«Dare to think for yourself» is, with Immanuel Kant, the guiding principle of the Enlightenment. For the German-Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm, this is core to a free, just society. Against the of cancel culture and identity politics to conform, but also against an all too truncated understanding of «Western values» and «liberalism», he calls for a renewal of the Enlightenment in the 21st century. Today more than ever, he says, universal values must be resolutely defended as values that are not based on any specific tradition or culture, but have been tried and tested through the ability to think for oneself. In a talk with Wolfram Eilenberger, the philosopher who teaches in New York and author of the book «Radical Universalism» (2022) explains his prophetic vision of finally redeeming the promise of adulthood, autonomy and freedom for all, really all people on this planet.
In this version, the questions are in German, but with English answers.
