For anyone interested these are called badgir (windcatcher) and other interesting things you might want to look at are the yakhchal (basically ice-hole) which were used to store ice all year through, and qanats, which were underground tunnels transporting water over insane distances. Some of these things that were built thousands of geats ago were in use until recently too

Yazd is such a beautiful place! If anyone wishes to go somewhere that looks and feels like a beautiful desert film set, Yazd is the place! The buildings look like they’re carved out of the rock! It’s so historic and evocative 🥰

The open shape also allows hot air to rise and be blown out of the home, as opposed to trapping the hot air in the home. Simple yet incredibly effective.

damn, people really don't understand how smart they were back in the day. These things use convection currents. That's fluid dynamics right there, one of the most annoying sciences to engineer with.
