Newport, Rhode Island is rich in history, with amazing historical homes, shops and mansions from the Gilded Age. It is also a beautiful seaport, with a plethora of boats docked along the piers. It has a charming downtown shopping district and numerous pubs, bars and cafes lining the shore. My day trip included a bus excursion to Elms House Mansion, Fort Adams State Park, President Eisenhower's summer home, and a drive along the coast. It also included a Newport trolley ride, which was a 90-minute loop around the city and shoreline. The trolley is a short walk from Bowen's Wharf, where the cruise ship's shuttle boats docked. Walking around the town is easy since the downtown shopping district is condensed and simple to traverse. There are also a couple cute mini-parks to rest in shade: Eisenhower Park and Queen Anne Square. It was a lovely day trip and I was able to see most of the city in my short day ashore.
