I signed up for the singles event (plus doubles and mixed) at a big tournament here in Cleveland next weekend. I’ve never played singles (55+) but I figured Why Not!🤷🏻‍♀️
I'm watching this video so I know what I'm doing!😂

#1 down the line from either side, low, top spin
#2 slice low cross court, follow in
#3 drop shot, lose point, curse, go back to # 1 or 2

I don't play much singles, but my success rate was transformed when I focused on disguising my passing shots. There's usually a way to use your feet to set up for one direction and then switch to the opposite side if you see your opponent starting to anticipate the shot direction. Maybe it's successful for me because I'm an older player whose opponents usually don't have the athleticism to cover all (or even 75%) of the court. Also, recognizing that there's a "chain-of-events" process, e.g. starting with a deep topspin serve to the body that requires a bit of extra footwork from the opponent, slowing up their approach to the net and opening up the angles a bit. At that point, it doesn't need much power - just a bit of accuracy to stroke the ball into the gap.

Thanks for this video, 99% of pickleball strategy tips are focused on doubles but I play singles more often so it’s interesting to see the differences.

I like that it’s mostly the same but you just have to be more physical in the kitchen but you can be more flexible with passing shots.

This is a great video! As a former tennis player who has almost solely played doubles, I’m playing in my first singles tournament this coming weekend. I’ve found that actually practicing passing shots even in doubles will help your accuracy for straight side line shots since it’s harder to do in doubles

kind of a new player here, but in my experience, i generally throw hard shots near the edges just to keep them back/at the sides. this gives me a chance to move into the kitchen and minimize their shot opportunities. at the very least, i make them run more and tire them out more. as long as i dont let them set up in the middle of the kitchen, i'm in a good spot

I think the hardest passing shot for me is the down the line backhand. When I can get it in, it’s very effective

I really like down the line it's very effective for me

I played singles this morning and realized I am much better at the angled passing shot than the down the line. I need to get more pace on my down the line shot, especially down the line backhand (working on it but it’s not there yet), but I tend to play with people who hang out at the baseline longer than they should (I think it’s a habit they developed in tennis) so the short angled shot, with or without pace, can get them sometimes if they aren’t that fast.

Just starting pickle ball - I’m 60 and a decent wheelchair tennis player. I used to play table tennis pretty well decades ago - pickle ball is great for me as the balls and bat are lighter than tennis so easier on my hand and shoulder. I can move mostly well enough standing for doubles but we often end up two against one and the singles end is tough! I can really whizz a down the line pass and can mega side spin like table tennis. Pickleball is great for me!!
By the way the wheelchair top spin backhand - reverse backhand - works really well for pickleball - give it a try… I’m enjoying your content - thanks.

Best singles video out there! Thank you. One question-when I rush to the net, I always seem to get passed. I am small so I can’t reach that far to each side. How can I tell if I should over a little to one side or another to get to their shots? When I am in the middle I can’t seem to reach their shots.

change of pace by hitting it real hard directly at your opponent's right hip (if he's right handed), and only if used sparingly, and as a surprise

Great tips, yet I can serve and return deep when I advance to the nvz I loose a lot of shots fired down the outside line, any suggestions?
