ZackGrooves Hears Architects For The First Time

ZackGrooves is a YouTuber, jazz drummer, and chops master.

He'd never call himself a rock or metal player - and that's exactly why we dared him to play "Doomsday" by modern metal/rock band, Architects.

Zack has never heard the song, let alone the band. We gave him the drumless track and asked him to come up with a drum part.

He said it's like nothing he's ever played. But his interpretation is refreshing and even gets surprisingly close to Dan Searle's original parts at times. From syncopated grooves to ghost notes and cool linear patterns, Zack made the tune his own.

“Man, don’t ever make me do that again, bro!”

I would make him do this 1000x over. This is so damn good.

He turned it from a quick paced song, to a technical math-core type song. I loved it. Gave an Animals as Leaders feel.

I like that he used ghost notes instead of double bass to match the guitar riff. Nice job

Dudes chops were almost made for post-hardcore. For a style he doesn't play, he literally owns the pocket. Reminds me a lot of the drumming on the self-titled Saosin album.

My dude kicked fucking ASS on this.... I was thoroughly impressed. Badass drumming and great ideas, and not only did he do a good job? HE WAS SMILING THE WHOLE TIME AND THAT'S WHAT ALL THIS IS ABOUT.

Most of the best metal drummers have jazz chops. His interpretation turned a straight metal groove into a progressive feel that really suited the track. Brilliant.

That hi-hat and snare part from 3:50 to 4:04, unreal.

Please DO NOT stop making these videos. Especially with modern metal songs that we all love. It’s so crazy to see these phenomenal drummers try and get the drums down without knowing the drums to the song.

I swear, I would LOVE to see one of these videos where the actual drummer shows up to listen without the substitute drummer knowing. These drummers are all fantastic! ❤

Jazz drum influence in metal is a tale as old as time. It just fits so perfectly. This is incredible

They gave him a REALLY difficult song and he absolutely killed it

Jazz Drummers incorporate some of the sickest grooves into a metal track. It’s like a flavor you never know you needed until you hear it. Absolutely incredible work!

The way he dropped into the beat at 6:22 gave me a dopamine rush. My jaw was open the whole way but that was just beautifully timed.

This might be the best presentation of Jazz vs Metal/Tech drummers.
Zack does an INSANE job adding to the chops of this already brilliantly written song.
I would argue that Jazz drummers can be equal yet opposite to this style of metal drummer. Opposite meaning, Jazz is on hands, metal is on feet. No disrespect to either because if you've heard both versions, it's hard to argue which version hits harder.
This is a great demonstration that metal drummers have a GREAT talent spending all that time on 4 limbs independently. Thank you Zack and thank you Dan. Holy crap.

Kid is a monster. In an hour he'd probably have something totally unique and still as good as what's on the record.

I missed the part where this was supposed to be embarrassing for him? Dude freaking killed it!

Him saying “his playing is very inspiring” is so fitting to say about architects. Cause so many people start bands after seeing them live
