Introduction to SASE (Secure Access Service Edge)

In a traditional network, there would be a hub site (such as corporate headquarters or a data centre) which has an internet connection and a firewall.
Branch offices would connect to this site, and traffic would flow through this central point. This made it simple to manage security.

However, things are changing. For one thing, more users are out in the field using mobile devices. For another, SDWAN and internet prices have made it easier to have internet connections at each branch. And finally, SaaS applications in the cloud are becoming more common. This makes it hard to apply security policies.

The SASE (pronounced ‘sassy’) model aims to cover these issues, by combining several technologies that we already know about. These include NG web proxies, CASB, zero trust, and firewall as a service.

For example, a user in the field may access their cloud app from their phone or tablet. They would connect through a firewall in the internet before traffic is passed to the SaaS application.
