this was a myth spread by bad game journalism and viral tweets, the actual reason is theorized to be hardware issues

For context: The runner had a console that's seen a ton of play as well as a cartrige that wasn't in the best condition anymore.
A cosmic ray bitflip could have caused a very similar visual scenario happening, but the values don't exactly match up, which almost completely invalidates the cosmic ray theory, especially with the old, slightly faulty tech causing very similar "issues" for other runners of other games as well as sm64.

Also don't bring the cosmic ray stuff up with any speedrunners. They'll glare at you, because mainstream fully bought into it, while it's almost proven to be wrong at this point.

It was never proved, it was just a theory, they flipped the value of Mario’s height bit but it even then it was not a match on what happen. The owner of that Mario 64 copy said that sometimes the cartridge only worked at an angle. So it’s more likely a faulty cartridge than the sun only flipping 1 but instead of crashing the game.

They ran an experiment in Japan to capture indicators of cosmic rays in a giant underground pool, and it took them a very long time per one detection.

The odds that one single cosmic ray interacted with this transistor in a way that benefitted this speedrunner are very low verging on 0%. It's not impossible at all, but it's so unlikely that all of those factors align that it would constitute a literal miracle by any definition.

Any other explanation is more likely. It's easily more probable that there was a hardware/software malfunction or that this speed runner was actually just cheating. Those are much more realistic odds.
