The fact that it is heavier than their hard sided (which I’ve had for years and LOVE!) is a deal breaker before I even look further… if it were at least the same weight… I’d seriously consider it… if it was lighter I’d buy it for sure!

Thank you! The 9lb was the deal breaker for me.

when compared to the rest of the competition out there this bag is a bit too big, a bit too heavy, a bit too expensive. it really seems they went with all about ascetics for social media posts and "travel influencers" rather then form, function and cost

I absolutely love mine and for those touting expensive I can tell you first hand Away is totally worth it if you travel. I emailed them a month ago for losing a hubcap and a zipper pull off of a gen 1 Away Carry on from their launch and no questions asked they sen me a brand new suitcase. Half a million miles later and it’s still fully functional just looks stupid missing a hub cap… not a whole Hinomoto just the vanity cover. I got the new case and they said keep the old one. The weight different is negligible IRL because the weight distribution is way better. I have never, not once been checked by any airline for a carryon being too big. i have tons of friends in the industry and they all say if you look like your carrying too much you must be. Getting stopped starts with walking in the boarding area looking like a mess with stuff hanging fromevery where vs walking in looking organized. Imma say see for yourself.

EDIT: I actually prefer the stiff Zipper on the frot pockets because the miscreants have internet access too, so they know this bag is a bitch to attempt to steal from because it would take a few seconds more.

The weight alone tells me that this is a no go. Thanks for the review.

QUESTION: have you tested any of these "vacuum compression" backpacks/ carry-ons? Sounds like a great idea, but I wonder if they actually work as described. Specifically, do they stay compressed or does air leak in?

I’m going to Europe for Christmas markets in December. Found a carry on It luggage with wide handle, only 4lbs! Lots of space inside and 2 roomy pockets outside. No compression pad but I’m using compression cubes. Holds more than my monos carry on.

Thanks for the review. While I love my Away hard sided bag my husband prefers soft sided bags so I was curious about the new soft sided luggage.

Great review. This is one I’d definitely want to test in person and not “blind buy”. Thks for sharing 😊

There are many other pieces of luggage that I would much rather have. This one weighs as much and more than several of the hard sided pieces of luggage that I have seen on the market. Outer pockets not so functional. I think I would rather stick with my very functional and lightweight backpack style carryon.

This absolutely does NOT comply to Air Canada. To quote directly from AC's web site:
A standard carry-on bag measures 55 cm (21.5 in) in height, 23 cm (9 in) in depth, and 40 cm (15.5 in) in width, while a personal item adheres to the following dimensions: 33 cm (13 in) in height, 16 cm (6 in) in depth, and 43 cm (17 in) in width.

Nor does it comply to Air France: Your cabin baggage must not exceed 55cm x 35cm x 25cm. Your accessory must not exceed 40cm x 30cm x 15cm.

9 lbs for the smaller carry on… that gives you less than 6 lbs of actual items before you hit a lot of international carry on limits lol

That bag is heavier than my 26” checked bag (which is around 7lbs).

It’s also a smidge too big for Air Canada, WestJet, and Porter carry-on dimensions (WJ is 21x15x9”, AC & Porter are 21.5x15.5x9”). I think it would be fine, but I don’t like cutting it that close.

And with weight restrictions on a lot of budget airlines being roughly 15.5lbs, it’s almost 60% of the weight limit. Definitely a deal breaker for me.

I have a lice of luggage I’ve been using in the last five years: it’s a great one and I won’t buy a new one until it breaks .
