Growing up in the 70's I was never into country music so I originally missed Tanya Tucker's version... Helen Reddy's version is the only one I knew. Both versions are awesome. A 1972 top ten country hit for Tanya Tucker and a number one hit for Helen Reddy in 1973.

My husband, Alex Harvey, who recently passed away., wrote "Delta Dawn" about his mother, who committed suicide when he was 14. The pain that he endured from her death continued to increase every time his name was not mentioned by Tanya. All those years, time after time, and again, right here... it wasn't until his passing that Tanya finally made note of the fact that if it were not for my husbands song, "Delta Dawn, " her life would be considerably different. Helen Reddy's version went to Number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Tanya's version was only a top 10 hit on the country charts. Helen's was so much better, sorry.
