I basically had this deck already with Kumena at the helm, and Xolatoyac is just another copy of Murkfiend Liege, Merrow Commerce, Quest for Renewal, and Seedborne Muse. I tried to make explore work in the original Ixalan block, but it felt too random without topdeck manipulation. If you're leaning into the explore subtheme of your precon, consider more cards that let you Future Sight.

The only reason I agree with swapping Xolatoyac is because he deserves his own deck with the amount of Simic shenanigans begging to take place.

I would never swap Xolatoyac. He‘s gross in this deck. Build a board, get to trigger your explorers multiple times with stuff like Helm of the Host, Roaming Throne or Topography Tracker so you have a lot of card advantage, buffing your merfolks like crazy and having massive land drops, bring Xolatoyac (which is pretty easy in this deck), get your merfolks Islandwalk (also easy by your amount of card advantage), give your opponents land a flood counter in case they don‘t control an island and let your army destroy everyone without the chance to block anyone of your buffed buddys.

Xolatoyac is a keycard here, imo. I‘m sure as hell gonna build him his own deck but for that I‘m just gonna buy him seperatly.

here's an idea, adding the shattered spire and hydra's growth. combine those two cards with branching evolution and harden scales for some serious counter ampage.
