India betters its position in the recent Human Development Report, released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The report is titled as ‘Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarised World’.

What is the Human Development Index (HDI)?
- HDI measures a country’s achievement in key human development areas like Life expectancy, Education, and Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.

Indian Scenario
- India has been ranked 134th out of 193 countries.
- After a drop in 2021, India’s HDI value has increased placing the country in the medium human development category.
- However, India is still behind its South Asian neighbors, such as Bangladesh (129th), Bhutan (125th), Sri Lanka (78th) and China (75th).

Global Scenario
- Switzerland has been ranked number one, followed by Norway and Iceland.
- Central African Republic (191), South Sudan (192) and Somalia (193) were at the bottom of the Index.
