A powerful winter storm is moving through parts of the U.S. and Canada this weekend, unleashing snow and freezing rain along the East Coast.

The system is sweeping through much of the Northeastern U.S. Saturday, before making its way to Ontario — where several weather advisories are in effect.

The storm is set to hit Atlantic Canada on Sunday and Nova Scotians are preparing for its arrival.

Vanessa Wright reports.

Québec started getting hit tonight and it's freezing now. I'm worried for the homeless since we didn't have the time to prepare since the holidays in a bunch of intervention places

Growing up in NL we were warned not to walk on the banked of snow on the sides of the road going and coming from school, because we could reach the power lines in some areas the snow was plow ed so high .that was back in the 50 and 60

So many homeless people now in Canada because of the high costs. Housing is not being built because of the high cost. Not that easy to try and exsist in Canada, it is no longer an affordable place for most Canadians.

NL had a storm on Friday/Saturday. Pretty sure that was the 1st 2024 winter storm for Atlantic Canada?
However, it does seem like there are a bunch of storms queued up to roll through eastern Canada in the coming weeks.

SADLY TRUCKERS TODAY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DRIVE IN WINTER. INSTEAD OF SLOWING RIGHT DOWN AND GETTING THERE LATE. THEY SPEED UP AND ALWAYS END UP LIKE THIS!!!

What about the rest of Atlantic Canada, like New Brunswick and PEI. Obviously Vanessa of Global news does not seem to know.

Nova Scotia does a good job preparing for storms like this. Like she said, they do brine and salt "before" the storm. In New Brunswick, we wait till everything ices up and at least 100 cars crash before, they put any sort of de-icing agents. Luckily trans Canada is okay but everywhere else is a gamble... Make sure to have studded winter tires in NB and if you don't have to drive, don't drive...

We need the snow badly. There have been so many fires this last year, without the blanket of snow forest will burn even more this year. There has hardly been any snow here in Ontario, as far north as Sudbury and North Bay.

Idk where the news gets its info but as of Sunday morning Jan 7/24 there are no weather warning for the Atlantic provinces on the environment Canada weather site.

Gosh, I hope those tents don’t blow away while those unfortunate homeless people are at work.
