Morse Code (CW) QSO on ARRL Straight Key Night 2017

Using a 1977 TenTec Century 21 with a Navy Flameproof straight key I am contacted by K4IIE in Georgia and we exchange information about our old ham radio equipment during ARRL Straight Key Night.

The rhythm for callsign "AA4OO" is the best I've heard - what a great callsign to have in every respect!

I’ve been learning CW for a year now, and even though I’m new, I could easily copy your fist. Excellent timing and excellent separation between words for nice copying. Well done!

Love my 26003a. Very robust, no-nonsense brass. (OK, cast iron.) And you can't beat the styling. Next to a shiny classic brass key, this one gets the most attention from onlookers.

I got a chuckle over the flamless key remembering my service as a radioman 3rd on a fleet oiler. We had a "normal streight key". The ship carried black oil and aviation fuel!! USN 64-67

Thanks for posting this! I'm working hard on my Morse and taking this down is proving excellent practice!

Really enjoyed, I’m learning the
Codes and practice drilling with a straight key but still not good enough at receiving but at the speed you are using I feel it’s extremely helpful. Thanks!

Hi Rich
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to that. Was radio op in the army and have ham licence but am not on the air. You never ever forget the code, do you!! Again, it was a pleasure. You have a nice, easy to read fist and I can say the same for K4iie. I enjoyed the QSO between the two of you...

I have a similar set up that I use for SKCC. I have the Century 21 and a surplus Army Signal Corp J-38.

I bought two from the people that bought the bunnell company, they were selling the last of the new old stock left, they also gave 7 pages of specs for the key and a paper with the bunnell paper stamp, they sold them pretty fast, they sold out a little after I bought mine.the add is still up on the internet. These keys were also used to operate the ships signal lights, you can tell if they were used for signal lights because the nob skirt has stamped on it, do not close for over 2 min. I looked around on the internet and I believe the Germans actually made this key first Before WW2. or vise versa. not sure. but the Germans used the same key at one time. enjoy
