It’s rust. The metal compartment below is supposed to be used as a cooler, and the center piece of metal is a drain plug. Someone probably put water in there, and didn’t let it air dry completely before re-installing the plastic liner.

This is user error, not engineering issue. I never use mine as a cooler anyhow. Love my journey

BROO- I bought my Journey this summer and had NO idea that this feature existed. Mine's not nearly that icky but I've definitely got some cleaning to do. 😂

At least it's just some dust. Our suspicious compartment had sticky black tar residue in it and I'm not sure what it is.
