Honestly, even if it was a real sea monster, could it be classed as a monster in the first place?
It would be around the size of a normal adult or possibly even a child to help lure in people better. The wrist size doesn't start expanding and getting wider so, this thing would actually be tiny compared to the picture. Which would mean alot of people would be stronger than the creature, and able to break free and swim away or even fight back easily. This means it would probably be forced to adapt differently as its strategy no longer works, it could get killed and sold or even made into food at restaurants. ( Not the hand part obviously unless a country allows that or something idk).

It's just a drawing. and even if it was real, it's pretty friendly! If it catches you, it'll stare at you for 5-10 seconds and put you back on land! it wouldn't eat humans, only birds. The artist who drew it just had that good skills and imagination that people believed the _myth_

Even if this myth is true (which it's not), it would be very easy to detect a monster from a child
1. size. The hand in the drawing is this size of the boat meaning that you could tell the difference between human and and monster
2. skin. If the monster lives in water, then it would not have the same skin as us through evolution
3. colour. Same reason for skin
