I still say this was his greatest performance and it is a shame he was not recognised for it. Manages to convey aristocratic bearing, sleaziness, courage and cruelty in the one character in one film. Impressive.

Archie was a great villain, but to be pitied too. Hurt's character simply uses him to win bets and as a mercenary, at the end obviously cares nothing for him, and Archie may actually be his illegitimate son.
