Quite an interesting site, thank you. Some info I knew, yet putting pieces together is so helpful for me! I’m a mom of a GB, we live a not-easy-distance apart and as I’m pretty aware of internet security there are a host of things I wouldn’t ask online. By the time I see him I can either have a list or go with the flow of conversation. This was helpful as I’d been trying to untangle if he’d done Ranger school first, then the SF training.

Just for context....

I was a medical tradesman so long ago we were "tradesmen"

The book we used to learn Anatomy and Physiology was (as are all training materials) "Restricted"

Because we didn't want the Russians to know how many bones were in our feet

As a medic I had to have a "Confidential" clearance...all medical documents with an individuals name on them are "Confidential"

(Queen Elizabeth broke a finger when she was changing a tyre on an ambulance in 1940)

One of the real consequences of doing something stupid and getting charged...was losing that clearance

'Cause if you can't work as a Medic...well we've got lots of potatoes that need peeling...so muck in lad

For a brief time I was rehabbing my knee...so they stuck me in the brigade orderly room

But to do that I had to be cleared to "Top Secret"

(Look at me mum!....I'm James Bond!)

And one day...a big packet comes in the mail marked "Top Secret"

So EVERYONE had to read it...once we opened the 6 or 7 envelops telling us not to open the next envelope unless authorized to view the contents...which you had to open to see if you were authorized to view an envelope telling you not to open the next envelope

Seems a ship to ship missile system (not used anymore) had shown some cracks in the guidance fins and was not to be fired until a remedy was found

And I guess that's pretty serious....if you're in the Navy

But they sent that message to an Army Brigade...in the middle of a 2000km from the nearest salt water

Which was so nonsensical we redacted the good parts and published it in our routine orders for the week

"Due to technical issues soldiers are ordered not to fire the blank blank missile system until further notice"

That's cold war INFOSEC for you

A very good presentation. Like the humor. Trust me it makes the lesson more people tend to reflect. On humor. They read it twice....to make sure. They got the joke. Misinformation also is found in the same file cabinet. It’s better to stick with conflicting stories! Since nobody outside this event really knows the truth.
