I was a BMXer in the 80s and we did it for style and it prevented our jeans from getting caught in the chain and front sprocket.

I think the trend has not come back because it really only works if your pants are pleated at the waist and fuller through the thighs. That way you get the contrast and desired shape tapering down to narrow ankles. That overall silhouette itself was fashionable, including the trend of wearing chunky socks over the bottom of your pants and stirrup pants that tucked into your low boots or shoes. It helped create the desirable, exaggerated hourglass from big, often padded shoulders to ideally small waist then rounded, curvy hips.

My dad taught me how to do this in the late 2010s when vintage "mom jeans" were very popular and the style reminded him of when he was a kid/teen. I give it a few years and it'll be back.

Yes, we rolled our jeans up. I don't remember that we had a special word for it, but we cinched them and then rolled them, so that they were tight. My friends, sister and I would then wear them with scrunchy socks and white Keds without the shoelaces. So cool, man. 😆 Also, we rolled our sleeves up on our shirts, no cinch though.

Peg legs worked well with ankle boots and leg warmers. Stirrup pants were also a popular trend
