Doom Patrol & Disability Part 2: Crazy Jane and the Praxis of Survival

I really like Doom Patrol and I have a variety of disabilities, so I thought I'd make a video essay about how the Doom Patrol member's arcs mirror many disabled people's!

Today in Part Two of my series I discuss Crazy Jane, the social and medical models of disability, and how surviving in a world that wants to destroy you can make you a cool punk rock antifa chick like Jane.

I've broken this down into 5 parts, and I'll post each episode in the days leading up to the finale :)

Doom Patrol gets so many things right. Jane is an amazing character and Diane Guerrero is acting the hell out of her. She's not defined by her condition but it's a big part of who she is, she accepts it and knows there's a reason for each of her identities existence even if she doesn't get along with all of them.

As someone with DID Jane means alot to me with her being one of the most accurate and respectful portrayal of DID in media right now imo most other medias usually demonize DID. Having a character that's with did that's not just stereotypes and horror tropes is so refreshing and really makes me feel seen

It always struck me how even though they cared about her, none of the others really made an effort to understand Jane even when they were given clear indications. Like Clint telling her to make her other personalities pop out and do things for them when she had to constantly tell him it doesn't work like that. Nobody ever thought to just be like "Jane, would you please ask Flit if she would help us with this?" even though that would be so simple and make things easier for everyone involved. It ties into your video about Rita, they focused on their own inconvenience instead of Jane's struggle.

I love my fellow NB, even if they are a sentient street!

We love this video so so so much! It's so wonderful to see you've discussed medical vs social model of disability and you've just done such a thoughtful commentary!

Ps hahaha I love that you said you love living in the future, we say things like that, mostly because we tend to "time travel" with flashbacks and those of us who go dormant when our body is younger and suddenly "time travel to the future" and find selves in adult body... I feel like I said it before knowing the others on our team but I'm not sure hehe, it's good wording though!

We saw a t shirt online that we like, it said, "the future is accessible" and we hope the future of the now IS [more] accessible! :)

It is amazing how you can show your video style is already define in just two videos. You can talk about multiple aspects of Jane with a lot of information and it is not 30 minutes long. I try to find other reviews of Doom Patrol and the majority is the same: they explain episodes but... I already watch it. It is valid but kinda boring. Perhaps now there are a good number of episodes and we can focus in specific aspects and how each character changes over the series.

I was just thinking of this sorta stuff. It occurred to me that, in the media, medical abuse in mental healthcare is always shown in a historical context. This kinda bugs me, and well...

I don't mean to imply that today's mental health system is just as bad as it was in the 70's, because I know things really have improved a lot since then. At the same time, just because things are a lot better now doesn't mean that medical abuse just simply doesn't happen anymore. I guess it's maybe a little like if movies only showed racism in the context of the 1950's. Sure, we've made some tremendous progress, and that's truly wonderful, but we shouldn't pretend like we already crossed the finish line.

It's a comic book reality that has little to nothing in common with actual reality, Jane is a comic book character, I can somewhat tolerate her presence in the show but it's really distracting sometimes and Robot man being overly sympathetic to her is annoying as well .

3:31 I feel a big problem is that people assume the medical model is the only way to go. People haven’t heard of social or recovery models.
