PVA glue water mix seal. Simple, cheap and effective.

This mix is so simple to seal your prepped walls, GIB, plaster or brick, before painting. It's essential before painting to create a bonding interface for almost any surface you've prepped. It gives paint the purchase to hang to and prevents unnecessary layer upon layer of undercoat. Dry unsealed surfaces will suck the moisture out of your paint too fast, which will reflect in the quality of your top coat finish.

Mix a bit of PVA in with cheap emulsion to seal plaster .

Trade Matt emulsion mixed 50/50 with cold clean water, and for every litre of this mix you have add 50ml of PVA to it and thank me later, I’ve never had this let me down and I do every mist coat like this now, 50/50 mix with a dash of PVA, it just seems to bind better to the new plaster, very similarly to the proper Base coat products I’ve used from Valspar and Dulux in the past.

Molly Ruby B, does this really, truly work? We have no exhaust fan, no kind of anything like that. All we have is a window that we try to keep open all summer, but that's it. Our walls are terrible, they grow mildew like kudzu in the south! Actually that's where we live, N. Ga. So it's really hot & muggy in the summer, ripe for mold & mildew. I was actually looking for a better alternative than Kilz when I happened upon your video. Please let me know what you honestly think!!!!#

if you have mild friable old painted walls with disintergrating plaster surface ie FRIABLE use this cheap method but with a stronger mix and you can either plaster or paint over this sound base coat .You can even plaster  before it drys.

You only PVA before painting when with experience you know you will need it. If you don't you will find it bubbles useualy because the person living there smokes so to stop the paint ruining because of the nicotine, PVA how he had done it is perfect he applies that so the paint sticks better with fewer coats. I'd advise you practise using it for it is cheap and in that case get a board and away you go.

Pva is fine but he mixed way too much Pva with the water about a fifth of what he used would be right if you put too much Pva it doesn't soak into the plaster it just sits on top

NEVER use PVA if you paint the walls after, the paint will not stick to it, ONLY use PVA on bare plaster/plasterboard BEFORE you wallpaper

Please dont do this. PVA will cause the paint to peel off later as moisture can get stuck under the PVA and cause it to soften and fall off.

A better trick on fresh plaster if using emulsion is to water down the paint in a 1:1 ratio and paint on and leave to allow the plaster to absorb the moisture from the paint. leave to dry for the full allotted time(Normally 4-6 hrs) and recoat as normal.

Be very careful with pva. Profs seem to like it and know what they are doing but do it wrong and your wall will not take paint again until you strip it all back off.
