🔥 Quick question for my fellow wisdom seekers: Which of the seven virtues of Bushido resonates most with your life right now?

For me, it's the virtue of 'Courage' - the ability to act with clarity despite our fears. As I was researching this video, I was amazed to discover how these ancient warriors used meditation to face their deepest fears.

Share your chosen virtue in the comments below and tell us why! Let's learn from each other's perspectives.
💭 And here's a challenge: Try applying your chosen virtue for one week. Come back and let us know how it changed things for you.

I started interpreting Zen Oct 2023 after a nasty bout of mental health led to harmful decision making. It's been an insightful and calming journey thus far. The more I read of it the more ironic understanding becomes. Atm, rather than seeking explanation and opinions of Zen, I'm more interested in Zen's history and am getting ready to read about Taoism and Confuscianism. Yet imagine my surprise when I discovered that Zen is responsible for Bushido. That Zen is the cornerstone of a philosophy of combat readiness gave me pause to consider the implications of what Zen teaches, sentiments echoed by Shunryu Suzuki though not outright stated.

So it never ceases to amuse me when a friend of mine chastises me for not sounding Zen when I express a violent thought - usually in conjunction with gaming scenes - as harm with full awareness is in alignment with the Zen mind. Zen has so far taught me the necessity of self-awareness in the willingness to embrace compassion, peace, and mercy but also that action is occasionally demanded if it be in maintaining awareness.

Budo, a bit later, Zen got my attention at quite a young age. Now, I can’t image life without … it has brought me so much. So much disillusion too. Quite a journey!

The seven virtues, and which one resonates at this moment.
I found myself unable to answer. They are all there, inseparable, like body and mind. Maybe they are just the same, using different words ….

The world has changed a lot from the era of the Samurai. Zen has been highly commercialized (the Netherlands), Martial Arts is more about winning and defeating your opponent, instead of your self. Attention has grown into a commodity, awareness is volatile.

Bodidharma (founder of Zen Japan), Shoalin Monks gained from intensive “body and soul” training. Just as so many people nowadays around the world.

Samurai has come and gone, human nature does not. Circumstances change, you change. The invitation to all is the learn, be a better you.

Sometimes I wonder of the many years of training and dedication was worth the effort. Time is catching up, old age is setting in.

Then “by change” I come across this post, and I realize that I’m, I was always on the right track. That is what is resonating with me and brings silent tears to my eyes.

Here in Rotterdam there is a giant graffiti on a building: We are all work in progress.

To those “truth-seekers” who are touched by Budo and Zen, the are many roads to choose from, one is not better than the other, just different. In time you see more clearly. In the end there is nothing to grasp.

You live, you learn, you die. No escape, enjoy it while you can. Have a good journey!

Thank you,

Peter Rumpff, Zen and Budo practitioner, still learning.
