Technically, they did have 'Flashlights' before the Incandescent bulb was invented though they were called Lamps or Torches (We call Flashlights 'Torches' here in Australia). The Acetylene Gas Lamp used by Miners produced a beam that had some throw to it.

I was hoping this would be a whole timeline of flashlight technology from 1899 to 2016. 80 percent of this was about how amazing flashlights are now, 10 percent was about how terrible the original 1899 flashlight was and the last 10 percent was a bit of general history on the Eveready Comet.

100 years, my ass. 17 years ago I was doing night security and the best we had were these shitty Maglite gas bulbs. This shit has all come to pass in the last 20 years, and the big breakthroughs have been in the last decade. .
