One of the most genius parts of the whole movie/play is the emphasis on the torture. When we read or hear “39 lashes” it’s easy to go “okay cool” without thinking about it. When you see 39 lashes and feel how long it lasts, it opens up a whole new door to understanding

I was in the school production of JCS, I actually played Pilate, I watched the film and studied Barry Dennen, his tone for this role is perfect, he looks very Roman, and has that aura about him, it is a masterclass, I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

The transition from "Die if you want to, you innocent puppet!" into the opening bars of Superstar gives me chills. Every time, no matter which version.

I've heard that Ted Neeley's mom watched the filming of this scene, and Ted's pain was so convincing, she started crying because she couldn't stand seeing her son in anguish.

Probably one of the most powerful versions of this song - Pilate desperately begging Jesus to speak up in order to save himself, but Jesus knowing He has to die. All with Mary Magdalene crying in the background.

Pilate's actor had a great voice for this role. The whole movie was phenomenal of course, but the sheer strain in his voice as he gives out the final verdict stood out to me the first time I saw it.

I love the shots of Pilate's face as he looks down at his hands and sees Jesus's blood on them...the conflict within him is written clearly in his expression, as well as the dawning realization that he (quite possibly for the very first time in his life) is utterly powerless and left with no other choice but to condemn a man who has done nothing wrong to death.

The direction for the whipping is fantastic. Mary screaming, the look on Caiaphas’s face, Herod laughing at first but getting disgusted by the end, and Jesus taking it but unable to withstand the pain by the final lashing. And Dennen was perfect.

3:26 the absolute anguish in Mary Magdalene's face and voice makes me tear up every damned time. And I've seen this thing more than 50 times. God love Yvonne Elliman.

Out of everything I’ve ever heard in rock music the 39 lashes guitar riff is one of the best most catchiest and most iconic riffs ever

Both Pilate and Judas are very troubled and sympathetic characters in this story, like way more than I ever would have thought growing learning about this in school . Like they are actual human people, not just power hungry sadistic madmen.

Barry's voice was just brutal in the part at the end. I mean, he has a very theatrical voice in the rest of the movie, but when he lets loose at the end there, whew. Definitely a powerful voice.

Mary's cry when Jesus is lashed is haunting and heartbreaking no matter how many times I watch JCS, Yvonne Elliman did it perfectly, the cry of someone who cannot endure watching a loved one tortured.

ok, I just realized, that Jesus said "Everything is fixed and you can't change it" because he wanted, to comfort Pilate, and wanted him to know, that it's not his fault. It's amazing. (or at least I like to think that) That's why I love this movie, you can discover new details every time you watch it.

I find it interesting how Pilate and Herod almost completely contrast in this musical.
Herod knows Jesus well from all the stories and considers him impressive because of his supposed magic tricks, when Jesus first enters Herod's palace Herod seems genuinely excited to see him and wants to watch him preform some impressive miracles, but Jesus stays silent even though Herod holds his life in his hands and eventually he grows frustrated and upset with Christ and just sends him off to die.
Pilate only knew a few rumors about this "King of the Jews, " when Jesus first enters Pilate's fortress Pilate is just skeptical of who this man is and finds him unimpressive, he doesn't want any magic tricks from Jesus, he's just some man; but then later Pilate also holds Jesus life in his hands and once again Jesus stays silent, but unlike Herod who became upset with Jesus for this Pilate genuinely starts to become awed with the man and wants to spare the mans life, but ultimately cannot.
It really illustrated the difference between the characters, both powerful men, but completely different in how they hold their power and how they view people.

It's weird, how King Herod is watching the flogging, and at first, he's sadistically laughing and enjoying it, but towards the end, even he's appalled and maybe even showing some remorse for his role in it.

I always watch JCS around these days and this is the best part. The whole setting is so powerful. The music, the lyrics, the acting, the setting, and Pilate.

What a great voice the actor playing Pilates had. Powerful, gritty and awesome.

I love how this play both shows Pilate's reluctance to kill an innocent man, and that while trying to help Him, Pilate got Jesus' blood on his hands by accident.

Pilate's change of expression between "Die if you want to" and "you innocent puppet" is amazing. What a great actor. RIP Barry Dennen.
