Herping σε Ωραιόκαστρο κι Επανομή Ιούλιος 2023 - ζευγάρωμα χελωνών, μικρό νερόφιδο, ασπόνδυλα κ.ά.

Herping at areas near Thessaloniki, Greece, July 2023. The first excursion happened to Oreokastro Lake on July 2 with Vasilis. We started from the lake, which had many introduced slider turtles (Trachemys scripta). On the dry meadow, we found a courting pair of Hermann’s tortoises (Testudo hermanni). The male was making the mating sound and the female was eating daisies intermittently. Then we found a large female and then a juvenile yellow scorpions (Aegaeobuthus gibbosus). On returning, we found the same tortoise pair again. We took another route and we found a male T. hermanni well hidden under olive prunings to escape the heat. At small ponds, mosquitoes had multiplied immensely and were attacking us. Then we found a female Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca). In the lake, some marsh frog tadpoles (Pelophylax kurtmuelleri) can be seen. Many adults were calling as well. Another T. hermanni pair was found, this time with larger participants. Sadly this mating failed, with the female leaving and the male momentarily flipping over and returning on himself. Treefrogs (Hyla arborea) were calling, but they couldn’t be located. I caught a little juvenile grass snake (Natrix natrix) though, which was a little less than 25 cm in length and had consumed some tadpoles. The second excursion happened to Epanomi wetlands on July 6 with Spyros. We started with a roadkill green toad (Bufotes viridis) and later, on the dirt road with virtually no traffic, a roadkill T. hermanni. Then a mole cricket (Gryllotalpa krimpasi) and two orb weaving spiders of the species Argiope brunichi with a molt. The vegetation was mostly of rash (Juncus sp), but later we found the beautiful and fragrant sea lily (Pancratium maritimum) in bloom. Mosquitoes were plentiful and attacking us at night, particularly at the ponds near the coast. On returning, we found a hedgehog (Erinaceus romanicus) and a female rhinoceros beetle (oryctes nasicornis).

Herping σε περιοχές γύρω από τη Θεσσαλονίκη, Ιούλιος 2023. Η πρώτη εξόρμηση έγινε στη Λίμνη Ωραιοκάστρου στις 2 του μηνός με τον Βασίλη. Ξεκινήσαμε από τη λίμνη, η οποία είχε αρκετές εισαγόμενες αμερικανικές νεροχελώνες (Trachemys scripta). Στο ξερό λιβάδι, βρήκαμε ένα ζευγάρι κοινών χελωνών (Testudo hermanni) σε ερωτοτροπία. Το αρσενικό έκανε τον ήχο αναπαραγωγής και το θηλυκό περιοδικά έτρωγε μαργαρίτες. Μετά βρήκαμε ένα μεγάλο θηλυκό και μετά έναν νεαρό κίτρινο σκορπιό (Aegaeobuthus gibbosus). Στην επιστροφή, ξαναβρήκαμε το ίδιο ζευγάρι χελωνών. Πήραμε άλλο δρόμο και βρήκαμε μία αρσενική T. hermanni κρυμμένη κάτω από κλαδέματα ελιάς για να απποφύγει τη ζέστη. Σε μικρά λιμνία, τα κουνούπια είχαν πολλαπλασιαστεί υπερβολικά και μας έκαναν επίθεση. Μετά βρήκαμε μια θηλυκή ελληνική χελώνα (Testudo graeca). Μέσα στη λίμνη, διακρίνονται γυρίνοι του κοινού βατράχου (Pelophylax kurtmuelleri). Πολλά ενήλικα κόαζαν επίσης. Βρέθηκε ακόμα ένα ζευγάρι T. hermanni, αυτήν τη φορά με μεγαλύτερους συμμετέχοντες. Δυστυχώς αυτό το ζευγάρωμα απέτυχε, με το θηλυκό να φεύγει και το αρσενικό να αναποδογυρίζει στιγμιαία και να επανέρχεται μόνο του. Οι δεντροβάτραχοι (Hyla arborea) κόαζαν, αλά δε μπόρεσαν να εντοπιστούν. Έπιασα όμως ένα μικρό νερόφιδο (Natrix natrix), λίγο μικρότερο από 25 εκ, το οποίο είχε καταναλώσει γυρίνους. Η δεύτερη εξόρμηση έγινε στους υγρότοπους Επανομής στις 6 του μηνός με τον Σπύρο. Ξεκινήσαμε με έναν πατημένο πρασινόφρυνο (Bufotes viridis) και στη συνέχεια, στο χωματόδρομο χωρίς σχεδόν καθόλου κίνηση, μια πατημένη T. hermanni. Μετά ένας κρεμμυδοφάγος (Gryllotalpa krimpasi) και δύο αράχνες του είδους Argiope brunichi με ένα έκδυμα. Αν και η βλάστηση αποτελούταν κυρίως από βούρλα (Juncus sp), βρήκαμε το όμορφο και αρωματικό κρίνο της θάλασσας (Pancratium maritimum) σε ανθοφορία. Τα κουνούπια ήταν πολλά και μας έκαναν επιθέσεις τη νύχτα, ιδίως στα λιμνία κοντά στην ακτή. Στην επιστροφή, βρήκαμε έναν σκαντζόχοιρο (Erinaceus romanicus) κι ένα θηλυκό σκαθάρι ρινόκερο (Oryctes nasicornis).
