I have a 151 Leaf SVE since new almost 160k km, still going strong and no serious issues in almost 10 years, even though they are old EV tech now they are still good cars.

LEAF is a great commuter EV. Got a 2018 recently. The 40kWh LEAF has a 100 miles range which is fine for my work commute and occasional journeys up to 200 miles with a charge en route. I wouldn't personally do longer journeys with it but others have done and coped ok. It's great value as a used purchase now. Less than £10k in the UK. If you can charge on AC at home and don't need a massive range, it's highly recommended. These are solid, reliable EVs.

I bought a 2022 back in January and it's a great car for daily commutes and I even range tested it from Seattle, US to Vancouver, Canada. It's not ideal, but it's doable!

I would always consider a Mk2 Nissan leaf if you daily commute is less than 120 miles a day. They seem to be very reliable and spare parts are plentiful. Also available are CCS to CHAdeMO adaptors which are a bit pricey at the moment, but I'm sure they will a cheaper more reliable.

Recently got 2022 40kwh sve spec with 10k kms. Was very apprehensive getting it but man it is great to drive. The pro pilot is a dream. Switch it on keep a leg touching the wheel and it will bring you up and down the motorway with very little input.

As an FYi I have a 120km round trip a couple of days a week into the office made up of mainly busy motorways and I get home with 50% battery.

All in all.. for the price of low mileage second hand ones, I couldn’t recommend them enough. Sure it’s not a m5 but come on… most of our driving in this country is in stop go traffic!

Good video and just got a leaf on business lease for 3 years as a bargain.
I do less than 8k miles per year so its perfect for us.
Have an ICE car for longer journeys not that we do any.

A great review Derek. My first experience of driving an EV was in a Leaf in 2019 and that is what sparked (on pun intended) my interest in electric vehicles. They are still a very good and practical car and great value at that price point.

This great review shows why old tech and low tech works at the price. The killer for me is the now well out of date charging tech, but otherwise it works. A bit over 8 seconds to 60 mph is about what I had with Alfa GTV6s in the early 1980s and it did not feel too bad then though probably sounded quite a bit better.

Looks good, wonder where you are finding it new at that price? But yeah its a second car due to obsolete dc charger port. Is there an adaptor that might allow using other standards?

Not sure where you got the 21, 995? Nissan Ireland are quoting the XE at 28, 495 inclusive of the EV grant.

Being offered a new Leaf SV as my wife is struggling with gear stick in current car - health issues - excuse my ignorance but what is the issue with the charging? Somebody mentioned is was obsolete? - Also the resale value issue in say 3 or 4 years time - would appreciate some straight comments please - great video.

I have had a leaf for 4 years as my daily driver. No issues at all. It's a strange thing by Nissan. Fantastic to drive, big enough, small enough, quick enough, comfortable, quiet. But for some reason Nissan did not bother to put in CCS and improve both the battery and install cooling for it. Very odd. Outstanding as a second car for a family but only as long as you can put an EV plug on your property.

I drove the first gen leaf for 6months as my first Ev, fantastic car it was, 17kwh usuable battery after about 10years. I really like the car but 2 things put me off when i did upgrade, lack of active battery thermal management and CCS charging port. I was stocked at slow chargers for hours on several occasions as the chademo i planned to use where out of service while ccs where abundantly available at those times. I now drive an MG Zs despite having the chance to own a 2022 nissan leaf at a cheaper price than the MG. The MG isn't perfect but coming from a gen 1 leaf with only 17kwh available battery, the MG is far more suitable for my use and knowing that i can charge at all charging stations is an additional peace of mind. But overall the leaf was a good car but Nissan failed to listen to customers about active cooling and ccs. In Sweden you can get the leaf top spec at a bargain.

I have a two year old leaf on lease. So glad I didn't purchase this car as planned due to the resale value. Great car, but aspects of it do feel a little cheap and plastic such as the electric handbrake which has a habit of falling apart.

I only do short commute, so this seems perfect. How does the leaf compare to the mg 4 ?

2nd Gen Used Nissan Leafs are getting soooo cheap, there are deals all over the place. It's really hard to consider anything else for a family car. Last July a relative of mine bought a Nov 2020 40kWh White/Black n-Connecta with <15K miles, for £9500 UK. There's not a mark on it and it still smells new. It has every function bar Pro-Pilot and the digital mirror. So in traffic jams you put it in ACC and steer. He's got around 166 miles per charge over summer, and at the moment keeps it topped up to 80-90% on overnight granny lead. He's getting a Level 2 EVSE unit to make that quicker. Very convenient, nice car, astonishing value.

Definitely would consider a second hand one as a run-around- and bringing the dog for walkies- that boot is great at, what was it, 420 or something similar - lots anyway. And a lower boot lip than the Soul, that’s the main car here. Home charging mostly anyway, so Chademo wouldn’t be an issue. ( Think there’s a converter plug now too, anyway). Hope you dried out OK, Derek ?!!

i've driven 4 million miles in 45 years. owned lots of cars vans and motorbikes.
our 2020 40kw leaf is an incredible car.
in 4 years only had to buy one wiper blade. has cost us almost nothing. cheaper than the bus.
never fast charged it. never serviced it. no need to is there? the mot is the service on an ev imho.
2023 cost us 190 quid entire year in electric 15k miles.
the range is the same as the day we got it. not fast charging is the key to long battery life. in fact we have only ever charged using the nissan supplied charger.
if you rarely drive more than 100 miles in a day just go buy one. you WILL NOT REGRET IT. the leaf drives like a rolls royce and costs less than takin the bus. utterly amazing car. we will keep ours untill it either rusts away of breaks down
