Mount Amber Globe-horned Chameleons (Calumma ambreense, Chameleonidae) From the humid montane rainforest of the Montagne d'Ambre National Park, Madagascar.
Chameleons move slowly, using characteristic swaying back and forth movements between each steps mimicking leaves blowing in the wind reducing the chance to get spotted by predators such as birds.
In order of appearance:
1. Juvenile Mount Amber Globe-horned Chameleon
2. Female Mount Amber Globe-horned Chameleon
3. Male Mount Amber Globe-horned Chameleon
Globe-horned chameleons (the species is also known as flat-casqued chameleon) have a flat casque on their head while males have two small globular nose appendages.
Chameleons are truely unique lizards with special morphological features:
* Their hand and feet grouped toes and prehensile tail help them cling to branches.
* Their tail curls up like a spiral while sleeping or resting
* Their extra long extensile tongue allows them to catch insects a distance greater than their length
* Their bulging eyes can focus and turn independently for a 360° vision
* They can see in both visible and ultraviolet light
* Their skin can change pattern and coloration
Globe-horned chameleon, like mlost chameleons are mainly threatened by the rapid deforastation of the Madagascar's original forests.
