Instead of aiming to better communicate with aliens they should be trying to find out why the whales are committing mass beaching!

"Scientists", always overexaggerate. They played whale noises through a speaker and a whale mimicked the noises. That's it, although it's still awesome it's not ground breaking as having an actual conversation would have been.

The beginning of the Star Trek Universal translator. Pretty cool if it works obviously. It is a dubious Prospect at best. But obviously money well spent regardless
