Emobility is increasing the demand for batteries by orders of magnitude. The optical measurement of the thickness of electrode foils is of utmost importance for the safety, lifetime and performance of the battery. Current market requirements are an absolute accuracy of smaller then 1 micron combined with a linear accuracy of ± 0.5 micron - measured on both wet and dry and thus black and porous graphite or cathode active material.

The task here is to perform inline non-contact quality controls of electrodes with the specific goal of inspecting coating thickness, offset top-to-bottom layer and start-and-stop edges.

Thickness measurements were performed at various steps in pilot production lines, e.g., before and after coating, after drying, and after calendering. The effects of vibration and belt spread are compensated. Film waviness and thickness are precisely analyzed and solutions are shown.
