Senate Judiciary CommitteeChair Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., pushed back on California Sen. Kamala Harris’ suggestion yesterday that Amy Coney Barrett had not been candid during confirmation hearings for her nomination to the Supreme Court. He argued that the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in articulating her pro-choice views during her 1993 confirmation hearing, was “not being candid about the law, that’s being candid about who you are,” and said it was clear to those watching that Barrett is anti-abortion and a practicing Catholic. Barrett had cited Ginsburg in explaining why she would not answer questions about her views on issues that may come before her on the court. Graham added that he was confident Barrett would set aside her personal views when it came to deciding the law. “There’s an effort by some in the liberal world to marginalize the contribution” of conservatives to legal and political life, Graham said, adding that he thought Barrett’s nomination was an opportunity to “shatter” the barriers that conservative women in particular face. “I’ve never been more proud of a nominee than I am of you,” Graham said. “This is history being made.” He praised the fact that an openly conservative woman like Barrett has now been afforded a seat on the Supreme Court. “This has been a long time coming, and we have arrived.”
