In this video we explore how a slave in colonial America played a pivotal role in helping Washington secure victory during the revolutionary war.

James Armistead joined the war effort hoping to exchange military service for his freedom. Instead of fighting on the front lines, he found himself acting as a spy within the camps of Benedict Arnold and British General Charles Cornwallis.

Did you forget, that James' master, William Armistead, was also petitioning for James' release from slavery? He was the one who wrote the Marquis de Lafayette to add his voice to petitioning for James' freedom.
