US state department spokesperson Matthew Miller was called out by a reporter after he made a joke about Israel's efforts to meet US demands regarding Gaza.

During a press briefing, Miller was asked to rate Israel's compliance with US demands to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza — on a scale from 1 to 10 or any other scale — within 30 days, or face potential restrictions on US military aid.

In response, Miller opted for a "pass-fail" approach, saying while Israel had failed to implement the required measures, the 30-day deadline had not yet passed.

He then made light of the situation, saying: "It's not the end of the semester. You don't give out grades in the middle."

This prompted a reporter to call out Miller's response as "inappropriate".
