The Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplin

The Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplin is a unique piece in many ways. Starting with the title, this rag gives a ballet or dancing feeling for sure, I definitely wanted to dance along when listening to this piece! This rag is structured with 6 sections as opposed to the typical rag composure of 4 sections. Also, none of the sections repeat again within the piece, which I found interesting.

This rag has a "stop-time" pattern for the second half of the piece where the pianist is advised to "stomp" the heel of one foot upon the floor in time with the beats for the remainder of the rag. That definitely is a fun gimmick to incorporate to make the performance more lively or interactive at gatherings; however, for myself personally, that extra factor made it trickier when playing when I tried it out. Instead, I decided to snap during some "rest" beats within the rag :)

Please ignore the slight blank mind moment around ~3:11. I played a little bit faster at the very end due to nerves of hoping to "not mess up at the end".

I starded loving Ragtime just few months ago and now I'm studying and adapting Scott Joplin piece by piece, all Joplin's production for accordion (my instrument), nearly every week. I didn't hear this piece already. But after your performance, it's scheduled for accordion adaption. The problem will be to snap my fingers. But I’ll find the right way. Very well done indeed.

What a surprise in the first place to see Ragtime Dance in my YT watchlist. I was offline for a few days due to other occupations. The more glad I am as you might be able to imagine that you had posted it now that I was switching my computer on again. And what lovely ideas you realised to emulate the stomping and tapping that is so easy going with other instruments, but since there are no Stomp or Tap keys on the piano, one has to be creative - and you certainly are.


The little speeding up towards the end is not disturbing at all. I heard it in any performance of the Ragtime Dance and I think it is an element of style when playing popular music to speed up toward the end in order not to give the audience any chance to fall asleep 😋.

From my first impression I see that you have made Ragtime Dance your own. I am sure to listen to it for several more times in order to fully feel it with all senses possible through a recording, i.e., not only hearing, but also vision, emotion and self reaction Thank you again, and take care.

I am also addicted to Scott Joplin ragtime for a long time now. Some pieces are adapted for organ and sound so good as if they were composed for it. You are an inspiration and motivation to start practicing those left hand strides. You make it look so easy :)
