Obese women should only gain 11-20lbs during pregnancy. So 10 wasn’t too far off, but yeah. The office was not equipped to deal with it, that’s just the reality. Also, saying she’s so heavy because she’s so muscular is wild delusional.

I was told to only gain 10 pounds in my pregnancy and I did it, I am obese (I had a 37 BMI when I got pregnant). Obesity during pregnancy can make your ultrasounds way more difficult, your sugar levels are messed, your breathing gets way harder while pregnant, your articulations become fuzzy while pregnant, so it is easier to fall down and my vertigo did real bad tricks on me while pregnant. And giving birth it is another level while obese, specially if they have to cut you, because the fat can make the wound heal way way slower... So they did the right thing if they were not prepared to care for her the right way.

If you listen closely the ob was referring her to a specialist and hospital who takes care of high risk patients. Alex doesn’t want to be considered high risk. This whole rant is about her and her feelings about BMI and being obese. Not about what is best for her baby.

Hi. Former NICU/ PICU nurse, now NP. People do not realize how much more complications are associated with overweight/ obesity when women try to conceive as well as during pregnancy. This is also why there’s such a drastic increase in cesarean sections and newborn/ neonatal complications. Not uncommon to see newborns stay in the NICU for complications related to maternal diabetes both gestational and type 2 related to obesity. This is a real health crisis, yet these fat acceptance influencers are talking about their health like it’s nothing. Wake the eff up!

By her own admission - she lost 110 pounds after gastric bypass and got down to the high 200s. She has noticeably gained weight since then (not kept 95% off) and is CLEARLY over 300 pounds again. There is no world where a 5'7" tall woman can weigh 300 pounds and not have weight be a concern during her pregnancy. She is deluding herself about how high risk this pregnancy will be for her and her baby.

Also, OB's are sued more than almost any other type of doctor. They can only take on high-risk clients if they're qualified to do so. They're not fat-shaming, they are trying to keep her and her baby alive thru the delivery. Such a victim mentality.

I think probably the biggest thing is that she cant accept that her weight is a factor in her pregnancy without also opening the door to the fact that her weight likely could have contributed to her previous miscarriage.

Its a hard pill to swallow and i dont think she's ready to come to terms with that.

as a women who struggles with infertility. its super common for OBGYN's and fertility clinics to have BMI guidelines. It makes it more difficult and challenging when already struggling.

I can’t believe she had the nerve to say she’s heavy because of muscle 😂

She's delusional about being "very muscular" when she has close to zero muscle mass, and also about having kept 95% of her weight off. She's not taking this seriously.

Ranting to the point you're about to have an anxiety attack while pregnant and driving is dumber than anything in her actual rant.

I literally cannot imagine struggling with fertility and especially pregnancy loss, being told that I was high risk, and screaming about discrimination instead of being focused on doing everything thing in my power to make sure this pregnancy is a healthy one.

This is anecdotal, but my obese mother actually lost weight during both her pregnancies due to bad morning sickness (obviously not good) and eating better for our health. This was the 90s/early 2000s so I don’t know if this is recommended anymore, but the doctors were super happy with her weight loss because it improved things like her blood pressure that made the pregnancy safer.

She's really playing the victim here. Maybe the doctor could've said things nicer but it is recommended that obese women not gain much weight during pregnancy due to the risks. That's part of why it's recommended to be at a healthy weight before getting pregnant.
And while BMI isnt foolproof, unless someone has a ton of muscle, they're probably unhealthy if they're in the obese category.

The BMI cap is for high-risk pregnancies, and some practices don't want the liability. There are OBs that specialize in all the issues that can come with being pregnant and significantly overweight or obese. I doubt her weight is because of muscle mass. I just really don't.

society doesn’t “only want to cater to certain people.” her weight is objectively dangerous for the fetus. she needs to take this seriously and get over herself. her weight complicates pregnancy and delivery, and because of that she should have been referred to a specialist. she’s high risk. they’d refer someone over 40 to a special obgyn too. it’s nothing personal.

I've done ultrasound on a very overweight patient who was approaching the due date. The doctor was trying to figure out if the baby had flipped head down (in preparation for birth) or if we were going to consider a c-section. I felt so bad for this lady. We needed 3 techs to do the scan. One to do the actual scanning, the other 2 of us held her stomach out of the way. And we couldn't see anything. Ultrasound is really good as seeing through water (which is why you can't pee before your scan, we're using your bladder as a good viewing window) but it's real bad at seeing through fat. It makes everything look like fog. The doctor kept reordering the scan in the hopes that another tech would be able to get the images, but we all took a go but literally couldn't find the baby. I'm sure the experience for the patient was just awful. I think about that patient a lot and hope she and the kiddo are ok.

The doctors office was 100 💯 correct by referring her to a specialist. She should want whats best for the baby.

It’s absolutely possible for obese patients to not gain any to minimal weight during pregnancy actually, and some end up loosing weight because they switch to healthier diet, it has no risk for the baby, in fact it’s better for them.
