I always saw cicada killers as gentle giants. After I overcame my phobia of wasps they've became one of my favorite insects. They're loud and easy to see so they don't sneak up on you and they're beautiful. Ive been around them a lot and they've never bothered me.

My first job when i was 16 was doing maintenance on a golf course. One day i was asked to pull the weeds out of the garden by the 11th hole unbeknownst to me there was a cicada killer burrow underneath. One i pulled the wrong weed i was immediately greeted by many cicada killers headed straight for me. I then pulled my shirt over my head and ran. Luckily i only received 3 stings (one on each arm and on my right trap) but man each one felt like an IV needle going in.

We had the cicada killers next to our driveway, when i was a kid. We always ran from them because they were so big.

Everything I see or read says these things don't bother people, but they are constantly buzzing around me. A couple of weeks ago one was on my back door in the middle of the night flexing its stinger at me. They aren't even supposed to be out at night! I do have a tendency to attract stinging bugs for some reason. I even got stung by a bee on my head when I was swimming twenty feet out from the beach in the ocean... I don't know why they hate me so much.

Last week I was looking for cottonmouths and I saw this Caterpillar on my shoulder and I didn't think much of it I was like "I'll let it go after I'm done". Well 15 minutes later I spot a cottonmouth and as I reach for my camera to photograph it, the Caterpillar had climbed between my arm and side and I accidentally pushed it together and all of the sudden I'm in severe pain. It turned out to be what I believe is a puss Caterpillar. The sting was probably the most painful thing I've ever experienced. It felt like a burning knife stabbing down to my bone constantly. Also unlike wasp stings the pain didn't go down very quickly. For 4 hours the pain was about the same. It didn't stop hurting till about a day or so. Apparently they're the most venomous caterpillars in the United states

I have them all over my yard in PA. I always heard they were docile but I have a bunch that hang around my front porch and one chased me to the door and stung the glass while I was watching it and it pumped out so much venom so that scared me and now I’m afraid of them lol. I wish I could post the pic I took of it.
Anyway thanks for sharing :)

Big fat stinger, weak venom. Paper wasps and the like aim to kill their prey with their stings, so their venom has a lot of toxic proteins and peptides that trigger cell death on contact. Cicada killer venom is lacks these proteins because they have to keep their cicada prey alive and fresh for their larva. As such it doesn't cause as much of the swelling and welting you see in social wasps. Big thick needle though, that's where most of the pain comes from and it tends to be very short-lived.

If you copy another youtuber (Coyote Peterson), at least do something original or different (As Jack's World of Wildlife does) In my personal opinion, you have to improve a lot...
