Is a trip to the past with a modern spin something you're up for? On July 10th, Ford will unveil its second electric small SUV in Europe, and the legendary Capri name might be revived.
Last year, Ford introduced the Explorer to Europe, and this next SUV will continue in that model's footsteps. The Cologne plant of Ford will produce both models, and they are based on the same VW MEB platform as the ID Series from Volkswagen. In contrast to the new EV's elegant fastback body, which aims to compete with the VW ID.5, the Explorer's boxy shape is reminiscent of the ID.4.
The Rumor Mill is in full swing, even though Ford hasn't yet announced the Capri's name or debut date. This vehicle was first hinted at in March 2022, when it was described as a "sports crossover" that will join the Explorer and electric Puma. For many Europeans, the return of the Capri brand will bring back fond memories of the 1969–1986 Cortina-based Capri Coupe. Classic Capris, marketed as "the car you always promised yourself," were basic rear-wheel drive coupes with engines that were between 1.3 and 3.1 liters in displacement and 50 and 150 horsepower.
An option between a 335-horsepower dual-motor combination and a 282-horsepower single-motor setup will presumably be available on the new model, which is considerably more powerful. The rear-wheel-drive single-motor variant can go from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in 6.4 seconds and can go 354 miles on a single charge from its 77 kilowatt-hour battery. With a 79 kWh battery, the all-wheel drive version with two motors can go 329 miles on a single charge and can reach 62 mph in 5.3 seconds.
We are eagerly awaiting Ford's formal announcement about the launch details. Is the new electric SUV going to be as good as the legendary Capri? Stay tuned to discover out how Ford blends its storied past with state-of-the-art electric vehicle technology.
